Your lease likely requires you to put repair requests in writing.

Here's how you do it.

Use this housing conditions checklist to check off the problems in your unit that need to be fixed.

On this letter, write the following:

  • the date
  • your landlord's name and address
  • your unit number
  • the problems that need fixing and their locations
  • your signature

Make a copy or take a picture for your records.

Submit your letter to the place you pay rent. Certified mail is always the best way to get proof your landlord received your repair request. If in the future you want to take legal action, you’ll have to send it certified or mail it regularly/give it in person twice.
